CHECKERS GAME GUIDE

Read the jump before you move.

Each side starts with twelve pieces on the dark squares. Move diagonally, take compulsory captures and win by leaving the opponent with no pieces or no legal move.

A capture is compulsory.

An uncrowned piece moves one dark square diagonally forward. If any piece can capture, you must choose a capture rather than an ordinary move. Jump over an adjacent opposing piece into the empty square beyond. Choose each landing square until that piece has no further capture.

You may choose between complete routes.

American / English rules do not require the longest available capture. You can choose any legal route, but you must finish the chain for that piece. A partial on-screen preview is not yet a completed turn; reloading restores the board before the chain.

Crown, then stop.

Reach the farthest row to become a King. Crowning ends that turn, even when a backward jump would otherwise become possible. On later turns a King moves or jumps diagonally in either direction, one adjacent step or jump at a time.

Look for the reply.

Before moving, ask which capture the opponent will have next. Keep neighbouring pieces supporting each other and avoid leaving one piece isolated. A compulsory capture can be useful bait, but check the entire reply chain rather than just its first jump.

Hints and Undo are available.

A hint highlights a legal route, not a guaranteed winning plan. Against the computer, Undo takes back your last turn and its reply. With a friend it takes back one complete turn. Each saved match retains up to 100 recent turns.

Touch or keyboard, at your pace.

Choose a piece and then its highlighted landing square. Tab to the board, use arrow keys between playable squares and press Enter or Space to choose. Escape cancels a selection. The same-device mode lets two people take turns on one board; it is not online multiplayer.

Know when the match ends.

Taking every opposing piece or blocking every opposing move wins. This version draws on the third occurrence of a completed position, or after 80 player turns without a capture or an uncrowned-piece move.
